NEW DELHI (PTI); Trucks stayed off the road in several parts of the country hitting the movement of essential commodities as an indefinite strike by goods transport operators demanding among other things abolition of toll tax received partial to total response.

Official sources said the impact of the strike was partial and there was  no response in states like cast Indian state west Bengal, south Indian states Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the northeast, While there was partial response in south Indian state Andhra Pradesh.

However according to reports Madras, and its surrounding areas were not  affected by the strike which did have a considerable impact in the industrial city of Coimbatore, Salem and several other areas.

In Kerala the strike affected the transportation of coconut toil meant for gulf export while movement of lorries came to a grinding halt in south Indian state Karnataka .

In Maharashtra retail and wholesale traders joined the truckers’ strike which received a total response. Petrol bunks in several parts of the state were also closed due to the strike.

Over 90,000 goods vehicles in west Bengal went off the road a Calcutta report said quoting the joint committee of the west Bengal goods vehicles operators association.

The center would convene a tripartite meeting of state transport ministers and transporters’ unions by next week to discuss the truckers’ demands the minister of state for surface transport, Jagdish Tytler told newsmen.
