AMRITSAR: Akal Federation a militant group has disowned and denounced its former convener Kanwar Singh as an Indian government agent and has appealed to the public to beware of his pro-government maneuvers.
The federation explained that Kanwar Singh had been expelled from the organization when he tried to barter away martyrs sacrifices by getting ready to hold talks with the then prime minister Chander Shekhar. He had floated a pro-government organization called Khalsa Darbar and later Shiromani Panthic Committee and had nominated himself as their leader He was now again trying to infiltrate into Akal Federation Kanwar Singh had also wrongly claimed himself to be called “Shamsher Singh”.
Khalistan Liberation Army which met at Anandpur Saheb under the chairmanship of Bhai Kapur Singh Jamraud also warned Kanwar Singh against issuing unnecessary statements about the internal affairs of Akal Federation and K.L.A. Kanwar Singh it may be recalled had claimed that Shamsher Singh and Kapur Singh Jamraud more fictitious names and that in future no fictitious names would be used. Kanwar Singh had further stated that Akal Federation did not indulge in militant activities and was keen on making Akal Takht the center of Sikh struggle and was also anxious to revive the old Sikh tradition of struggle and dialogue.
Interestingly Kanwar singh was the person who had not only pleaded for talks with Chander Shekhar but had also proposed retired major-general Narinder Singh as Jathedar of Akal Takht “so that the Sikh struggle was centered round Takht.” This proat that time had been endorsed by the panthic committee associated with Dr. Sohan Singh and others.
These plans were criticized by a very few organizations in Punjab but an overwhelming majority of them had fallen in line with Kanwar Singh. Akali leader Simranjit Singh Mann Gen Narinder Singh Justice Ajit Singh Bains and Col Partap Singh were among the supporters of the idea.
In fact Col Partap Singh had then sharply condemned Punjab Human Rights Organization (Ludhiana) for its opposition to the talks “without creating a proper climate to make the talks a success.” The colonel had described the PHRO as an organization comprising “mischievous elements”
The panthic committee associated with Dr.Sohan Singh and others had later not only dissociated itself with the talk’s proposal but had strongly condemned the moves for talks as engineered by Indian agents.
