BHUBANESWAR (PTI): In a bid to scale down extravagant spending at marriages, Orissa state July 15 passed a bill restricting expenditure at a wedding to Rs 25,000 (800 Dlrs), a move criticized by ruling and opposition parties the bill, which also limits the guest list to 50, was described by many Opponents as “impracticable.”

The violation of the law has been made punishable with imprisonment which might extend to six months and fine. The offence under the act would be non-cognizable and bailable.

The state government felt the enactment of such a law was necessary to curb the “unholy tendency” of the poor to compete with the rich in making marriages lavish affairs.

State ministers found violating this have been warned that their posts would be axed.
