In June 1989 Bhai Harpal Singh was arrested under false charges and remained in the Amritsar jail till Oct.15, 1989. He was bailed out and formal charges were dropped at the recommendation of the Bains committee. He fled India to England in 1990 after his and later made his way to the U.S. where he served as Secretary General of the Sikh Youth of America for a short time.

Upon the failure of the govt. to produce him in court the P.H.R.O. was notified. Dr. Rajwant Singh of the P.H.R.O. sent telegrams on his behalf to Amnesty International and to the Sahar airport police station in Bombay where it is believed he was being held.

Amnesty International spoke to D.S. Gill of the P.H.R.O. in Ludiana who then sent telegrams to the chief minister of “Mecharashtra the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India and to the Home Minister asking for information.

Typical if the Indian Govt’s treatment of Sikh youth after his arrest no word has been heard about him Youths often undergo arrest torture and murder by the Police. Reasons given by police include false stories about involvement in militant or “terrorist” acts.
