JAMMU(PTI):Four hundred police personnel of northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir have been dismissed in three years for their involvement in militancy, the director of general of police, J&K, B.S.Bedi, said.

However, he said there was no involvement of any police personnel in militant related activities during the last one year and the local police was fully involved in action against militants.

In an interview to PTI, Bedi said 700 police personnel belonging to the state police were found involved in militant related activities during the period.

Of these, 400 policemen were sacked and 200 detained under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA), he said. On the alleged excesses by security forces, Bedi said 124 cases have been registered against them so far with punishments ranging from three months to 10 years.

He admitted that fear of the gun Sill persisted but it was less now. There were signs of improvement in Kashmir, he said, Day curfew was clamped in some parts of the Valley only on three occasions last year, tourist mosh had increased last year and militancy was now confined to only a few districts in the state.

He said 2100 militants were killed, 1000 surrendered and 11,000 weapons recovered in the last two years.
