BOSTON: The AIDS epidemic caused more human tragedies in 1991, with no scientific breakthroughs that could prevent the lethal disease.
Worldwide, an estimated eight million people carry HIV, the AAIDS virus, and that number will grow to 40 million by the year 2,000, researchers say. Three quarters of them catch it through sexual relations.
At least six million Africans are already infected, or one of the 40 adults, according to the World Health Organization, Some 750,000 children have been infected with the AIDS virus after receiving it from their mothers.
