JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir is likely to face a power shortage of nearly 1000 million units against its actual demand this summer, Al present the state’s power demand stands at about 45000 million units, The state is able to generate about 1000 million units of power of which nearly 23000 million units, is supplied by the northern grid.
The state power secretary, N.R. Gupta, said here recently that the power cuts in the Jammu region and the Kashmir valley would continue during the summer months also. “Despite the shortfall in supply and self-generation, we are trying to manage the power situation efficiently to save the people from the summer heat,” he added.
He said the Chenani powerhouse in the Jammu region was generating about 100 million units of power. Among the power houses in Kashmir, the lower Jehium was generating 570 million units, upper Sindh hydel project phase 1, 100 million units and General power project 46 million units. “These power houses are very old and their machinery is worn out causing a shortfall from their original penetrating capacity.” Gupta said a gas turbine project producing 100 megawatt of power was likely to be commissioned next month, while another with a capacity of 75 mw was already streamlined.
