CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister, Umrao Singh, informed the Vidhan Sabha on March 11 that a total of 854 complaints were received during the panchayat elections. Replying to a question from Romesh Dhutt Sharma (BJP), the minister said the complaints had been referred to deputy commissioners for necessary action. He said 15 other complaints pertained to the creation of new panchayats. Vimla Dang (CPI) wanted to know the fate of the complaints brought to the notice of the state government from about 40 villages in the Tam Taran police district where, she said, even the filing of nominations was not allowed by the police and the bureaucracy, She said even a section of the ruling party had complained about it. Umrao Singh said the deputy Commissioner was examining these complaints. He said some of these could be taken up only through election petitions.
