NEW YORK: On March 7, 1993 the York University Sikh Students Association held a seminar on titled Punjab: The Ongoing Struggle for Human Rights. A play was performed by the student which has followed by an evocative address by Dr. Amarject Singh. Many members of the Sikh Community, especially the students are unaware of the facts surrounding the situation in Punjab, The main purpose of the seminar was to educate and en lighten Sikhs and non-Sikhs about the widespread human rights violations taking place March 17. The students wrote, directed and performed a touching play in efforts to portray the reality and despair which is so much a part of everyday life in Punjab. The main highlight of the evening was the address given by Dr.Amarjeet Singh, who is a member of the Council of Khalistan and spokesperson for the Panthak Committee, which has made a distinguished effort in bringing Punjab’s situation to the attention of the United States Senate and Congress. Dr.Singh gave a detailed account of the trials and tribulations of the Sikh community since India’s independence in 1947.
He outlined the many historical contingencies, and how they have worked to undermine any faiths who’s doctrines are not in accordance with Brahmanism. Dr.Singh’s speech was rooted in historical and political facts which helped to shed light on how the situation cage to be the way it is today.
Over 400 people attended this seminar each of whom came away with a greater understanding of the background of Punjab politics. This seminar was part of the York Sikh Students Association’s effort to create a greater aware ness of the issues which are of concern to the Sikh community.
