UNITED NATIONS (PTI): India has called for measures to “stem the tide” of illicit arms transfers and its “unholy nexus” with trans-border Terrorism and secessionism which poses grave danger to international peace and security.
In his first address to a United Nations committee, India’s new ambassador M.H. Ansari described the proposal for a nuclear free zone in South Asia as “flawed on many counts” and opposed enhanced role for the Security Council in the field of disarmament.
Regional disarmament had its value in the context of achieving global disarmament but any con side ration of specific proposals must come about as a result of full agreement between the countries of the area, he emphasized.
Ansari said the proposals must also take into account the specific characteristics of the region and the differing threat perceptions of individual nations.
“This is especially relevant when defining the geographical scope of a region.”
