NEW DELHI (PTI): A massive 8,187 memoranda of understanding have been signed for setting up new units in the country with a huge total investment of Rs 1,970 billion since the liberalization of economy in August 1991.

Announcing this, minister of state for industries Krishna Sahi told a news conference here that the western state of Maharashtra topped the list with 1,323 memoranda of understanding followed by another western state, Gujarat with 1,141 and the northern state of Uttar Pradesh with 1,085.

The northern state of Punjab, despite militant activities in the state, had attracted lot of new industries particularly with foreign investments, she said, the memoranda of understanding here signed till January numbered 602, next only to the three states on the top of the list.

She said west Bengal (east), here home state Bihar (cast) and Kerala (south) were at the bottom of the list with 291, 81 and 38 respectively.

Sahi said most states offered similar incentives and yet some Slates were able to attract more industrial investments.
