For the Sikh community, the recent passage of S.248 in the United States Senate can be viewed as the highlight of bicentenary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. The passage of this bill will allow Sikh young men to serve in the armed forces of the United States of America without giving up any of the basic elements of the “Rehat” which we are all required to maintain. This legislation opens up a profession in which Sikhs have always excelled. Now it is up to our young men to display valor and patriotism by entering in the armed forces of our adopted homeland. The passage of this legislation is a clear confirmation of the fact that the United States of America is truly a country in which everyone gets an equal opportunity regardless of one’s race, religion, and national origin. Let us all pray in our Gurdwaras that the Almighty God should continue to shower His blessings on this great country of ours. Sir Max Arthur Macauliffe was one of the first person to translate Guru Granth Sahib into English, and thereby introduced Sikhism to the Western World Details of his life and his contributions towards the Sikh Community, illustrated above, were recorded in his “Mahan Kosh” by Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha, a contemporary of Macauliffe. Guru Gobind Singh Foundation will be planning an event this year to mark the 150th birth-anniversary of this great person. The de- tails will be sent to you at a later date.
