NEW DELHI: Kanshi Ram, the 55yearold President of the Bahu jan Samaj Party (BSP). Emerged number three, just behind the Congress (I) runner up Sunil Shas tri, in the 1988 Allahbad by election to the Lok Sabha, which was won by Janata Dal Chief Vishwanath Pratap Singh.
Described as a political tortoise who believes in slow but steady progress, Kanshi Ram secured around 18 percent of the total 3,95,695 votes polled 47.2 per cent) in the bye lections.
