NEW DELHI: Leader of the Jana ta Dal in the eighth LokSabha, Prof Madhu Dandavate, 65, Makes his fourth attempt to retain the Rajapur seat in Maharashtra which he represented in the past four Lok Sabhas.

Minister of railways in the Janata regime, the veteran socialist is one of the few stalwarts who withstood the pro Congress wave in the 1984 polls. He has a list of impressive electoral victories to his credit.

A former professor of physics as also the Vice Principal of Siddharith College in Bombay, Prof. Dan davate participated in the quit India movement in 1942.

Besides, he led a Satyagraha in Goa against Portuguese imperialism in 1955 and participated in the land liberation movement. He was detained during the emergency.

Mr. Dandavate is pitted against Shivraj Bhonsale of the Congress (I) this time.
