NEW YORK, NY: A demonstration was held in front of the Indian Consulate on Nov 4, 89, by the Indian Peoples Committee against Communal Violence, to highlight the Indian governments failure to punish the guilty in the Nov. 1984 anti Sikh carnage.
A group of a 150 people demonstrated at 64th street and 5th Avenue in front of the Consulate. They were led by Indian Progressive Study Group, a Columbia University based body. The distributed flyers which mentioned the overt and covert non secular acts by the Indian Government, which professes to be secular.
They specifically mentioned communal incidents in Jamshed pur in 1979, Muradabad in 1980, Delhi in 1984, Meerut in 1987 and the recent incident in Bhagalpur, where the State and Central government connived to protect the perpetrators of the violence.
The group held a public meeting at Earl Hall in Columbia University, where they condemned the emerging confrontation between the Hindu and Muslim fundamentalists. They said Rajiv Gandhi government would be held responsible,” even if one person dies on Nov 9, because of communal violence.$$L A number of Sikhs including Dr. Satwant Kaur Dhamoon, President Sikh Women’s International Organization, were present.
