VANCOUVER, B.C., Can.: W.S.O. (Canada) President, S. Gian Singh Sandhu sent a letter to the Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney, protesting against the front page coverage in The Vancouver Sun on September 19, 1987, headlining “Clyne wants to see Canada remain white” and described it as “disgrace for the Canadians”.

He further stated that for a democratic process to succeed, “we fully realize that the individual’s freedom of speech is paramount. However, the remarks that are racists and a threat to the unity

of Canada should not be tolerated by the government. Mr. Clyne who spent major part of his life upholding the constitution of Canada has shocked the Sikh community with such an irresponsible statement. We are left to wonder about the decisions His Worship (retired Judge Clyne) may have rendered as Supreme Court Judge in British Columbia.

Our organization strongly demands that:

“All court cases in which ethnic people were involved should be scrutinized to ensure that the judgments were not racially motivated.

“The activities of Mr. Clyne and his group (Immigration Association of Canada) should be investigated to prevent racial differences and colonialization.

“A system should be established to screen such elements from the society before they are appointed to positions where they are empowered to use powers to keep Canada white”.

He also sent a copy of his letter to the Attorney General, Mr. Brian R.D. Smith, Q.C.
