A Gurmit Camp for educating the Sikh youth was held in the Vancouver Island during the second week of August. The youths stayed at the Gurdwara in Vernon and they visited Victoria and Nanamo for a day each where they sang Kirtan and impressed the Sangat very much.

The training made them feel ‘great about being born and raised as Sikhs. The written opinions obtained from the students included the following expressions of.

  1. “I have lost weight but I have ‘gained much knowledge. I have learnt to be proud of my religion and appearance. Now when my friends ask me questions I can ‘answer them better. The lecture on Thursday morning on why my hair is important was incredible.”

“I have learnt many things about Sikh history since I came to this camp I feel very proud to be a Sikh after listening to the lectures. I have also met many friends from all B.C.”

Meera Kaur Binng “Quit of this camp, i received many benefits. Here I learnt about our religions history. I learned about the gurus, reincarnation, gurdwaras, sacrifices made by the Sikks and much more, I also received the benefit of making new ‘friends, Tam proud of my religion now more than ever.”

The camp was conducted by S, Gurdev Singh Dhaliwal, Principal Punjabi School, Ross Gurdwara Khalsa Diwan Society, Dr. Gubakhsh Singh, Religious teacher KhaIsa School Vancouver gave lectures on Sikh history and Sikh philosophy. The theme of the Sakhis was “Blood of the Martyres builds the Nation.”

The Sikh at the cost of their life practised:

Fear None, Frighten none, Love the Lord, Mighty one.

The Sikh Sangat of the Vernon gurdwara were all the time busy doing sewa throughout the week. The Sikh youth felt very much obliged to them and were impressed by the Sikh principle of doing sewa.
