NEW DELHI: The Election Commission allotted “chakra” (wheel) symbol to the Janata Dal at the national level and reserved two other symbols for the anti-merger groups of the erstwhile Janata Party and Lok Dal, PTI reports.
The allotment of symbols comes subsequent to rejection by the three member commission of the Janata Dal’s claim to the “chakra, haldar” symbol that be longed to the old Janata Party. The claim had been questioned by the anti-merger group led by Mr. Indubhai Patel.
The Janata Dal and the two anti-merger groups have been recognized as national parties on an all Tndia basis with a reserved symbol.
The Indubhai Patel Group has been allotted to the symbol of “farmer with a spade within wheel” and will be known as the Janata Party (JP), the Kush waha Group has been given the “bullock cart’’ symbol and will be known as Lok Dal (B).
Mr. Devi Lal welcomed the election commission’s verdict of allotting “wheel” symbol to his party.
Janata Dal parliamentary board chairman of the southern Indian state of Karhataka S. R. Bommai Sunday said allotment of “wheel,” as symbol of the party by the election commission was “welcome under the given circumstances.”
