By Our Correspondent CHANDIGARH: Three leading lawyers of Punjab who are defending GS. Tohra, SGPC president, were not allowed to meet him on. June 17 in the Patiala jail where he is lodged.
Ajit Singh Sarhadi, Hari Singh Bagra and G.S. Grewal in a statement said they were told at the gate of the jail that there was “total ban” on meetings with Tohra. The conditions of “detention” imposed on Tora the statement said were illegal.
The lawyers said they wanted to seek some legal instructions from Tohra and also discuss some aspects of the constitutionality of a new legislation for the purpose of challenging them in the High Court. They gathered from the jail Officials that Tohra had been lodged in solitary confinement.
This ban, they argued was a clear violation of Article 21 of the Constitution and certain clauses of the Jail Manual. If the lawyers were not allowed to meet under trials, how could the trail be fair, they asked, adding that the attitude of the authorities towards Tohra was “alien to any decent society.”
