CHANDIGARH, India Oct. 26, Reuter: Police in violence wracked Punjab today = sought five gunmen who sprayed crowded village market with sub machine gun fire, killing eight people and injuring four others.

Home Minister, Buta Singh, Punjab Governor, S.S, Ray and Chief Minister, Sunjit Singh Barnala, left Chandigarh early this morning to visit Kuban, 300 km (200 miles) west of the State capital, officials told Reuters.
Police increased the death toll to eight from the previously confirmed seven and said it appeared four people had been injured. They told Reuters the dead included one Sikh and five Hindus.
The attack came without warning at about 7:30 pm (1400 gmt) when five gunmen walked into the ‘market and opened fire. They then fled to motorcycles that had been parked nearby and sped off, firing as they went, police said.
The Press Trust of India said the: village market was “splashed with blood” and deserted after the attack.

It was the worst single act of violence since July 25 when 14 bus passengers were shot near Muktsar.
