NEW YORK Reuter: Former Philippines leader Ferdinand Marcos personally is directing a campaign to destabilize President Corazon Aquino’s government Newsweek said.

Marcos told Newsweek that he was irrelevant because an exile is always irrelevant” but the magazine said in its latest edition it had learned that he personally was directing a campaign to undermine the Aquino government.

Citing unnamed sources in Manila close to (Marcos) Loyalist Organizers “the magazine said his supporters channel large amounts of cash into the Philippines to finance pocket rebellions around the nation”.

In an interview from his rented exile home in Hawaii Marcos denied that he had taken any action to destabilize the Aquino government. “Why should I?” he said “they are destabilizing themselves.”

“We can’t afford it (sending money to Aquino foes)” he said. “In my state of destitution we can barely pay our legal fees and maintain our standard of living”.

Marcos has been accused of stealing a fortune in the 20 year she was President. He fled in February afire a civilian backed military revolt that swept Aquino to power.
