WASHINGTON Reuter: Basing elite US. Delta Force troops abroad might make the unit more effective in responding to terrorist situations overseas Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger said.
He said the shadowy counterterrorist unit could make a major difference in the outcome of a hijacking or other attacks against the Americans but he would not discuss reports that Washington is seeking a base in Britain or West Germany
“There’s no question that any military force is and can be more effective if it is deployed closer to the area of its use” Weinberger said in an interview with News Agency reporters.
But the effectiveness of Delta is that we don’t confirm or deny reports or rumours about it he added.
Administration officials told Reuters last week that the United States is actively considering moving at least some members of the force overseas from their base at Fort Bragg North Carolina.
In London the Sunday telegraph reported that Washington had asked both Britain and West Germany for permission to base some units there to be closer to possible terrorist targets in Europe or the Middle East.
