What is a Sikh?

The seminar addressed this issue in various ways based on Rahit Maryada, teachings of our gurus. It was identified with clarity that Sikhism represents “The Faith”, Christianity and Islam appeared before Sikhism. But if we look at Sikhism, it is the first most developed and idealistic faith. Sikhism is rooted in democratic ideals. It would not be possible by scientific study to establish a better religion/faith, objectively speaking.

Attributes of Sikhism.

Physical appearance as reflection of identity or uniform. Moral attributes as defined in Rahit Maryada, Spirited discipline. Many aspects of faith, Spirituality makes it unique. Sikhism is well-wisher of all mankind as evidenced in our Ardasa.

Equality & Casteism. This topic was discussed in depth. The role of women was elaborated upon and comparative religious ideology was presented. The equality of women in Sikhism totally preempts the west. The US constitution has not passed ERA. However women’s cause and position needs to be promoted.

Kirtan the role of Raags, music and harmony were identified in developing a link to Akalpurkh.

Guru Nanak’s mission

Guru Nanak’s mission was to develop a faith open to world based upon love and peace.

Panel Discussion

There was a lively panel discussion. The following topics were discussed: the difference between Sikh & Khalsa concern for lack of Sikh Unity.

Many questions were raised and not all answered. These types of seminars create the opportunity for further discussions.

It was generally felt that this seminar was educational and informative. There was a strong feeling that there should be more programs of similar nature. Those who missed this seminar missed something really significant.

Dr. Kamajit Kaur Sethi summed up the seminar. The Chairman Amarjit Singh thanked all the participants and the sangat.
