NEW DELHI: India Friday asked Pakistan to take the ongoing process of bilateral dialogue to reduce the present tensions to its logical conclusion in the letter and spirit of the Shimla agreement.

President Venkataraman told the new Pakistan high commissioner, Abdul Sattar, that “there is a need, even more than ever before, for us to pause, ponder and work out what we can jointly do to enrich the lives of the peoples in the subcontinent.”

Presenting his credentials, Sattar said good neighbourly relations with India were “by no means beyond reach” as there were no disputes which could not be resolved by peaceful means tried and tested by the world community.

Sattar expressed the conviction that India and Pakistan were capable of chartering a course of policies and actions that could banish mistrust and fear, foster confidence and ensure peace and harmony.
