LONDON: Kuldip Nayar Saturday resigned as India’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom following the defeat of the V P Singh government on a motion of confidence in the Lok Sabha.

Nayar has sent his letter of resignation to president R Venkataraman requesting to be relieved with immediate effect. He is expected to leave for India towards the end of this month.

In his resignation letter, Nayar, an appointee of the V P Singh government, is believed to have stated that in view of the change in government, he would like to relinquish the office of the Indian high commissioner to the UK.

Nayar took over as the high commissioner on March 15, 1990 after his predecessor Maharaj Krishna Rasgotra resigned in the wake of Janata Dal government headed by Mr V P Singh assuming power at the centre.
