Not much is heard of the seething revolts and its harsh repression by the Indian state in this eastern state. The situation is far more serious than even at the peak of the AASU stir. Then it was expel foreigners, today it is independence, there are several factions all heavily armed.

United Liberation Front of Assam and the United Reservation Movement Council of Assam openly run military style training camps both in Assam and Burma. They obviously have a strong popular base. Their cadres are armed with sophisticated modern weapons and wear uniforms. Such militants number over 100,000 and are growing steadily. At the heart of the issue is the demand to end exploitation by India.
