NEW DELHI: A World Congress on AIDS will be held in December in Bombay, classified by many as the AIDS capital of India.

I S. Gilada, honorary secretary of the Indian Health Organization told reporters Saturday the three day Congress beginning December 7 will focus on AIDS related issues in the developing countries.

“Authorities around the world have predicted that India is on the verge of a major AIDS epidemic which needs to be tackled on a war footing,” Gilada said.

He said AIDS infection among prostitutes in Bombay, which was less than 0.5 percent when the THO started screening them in 1986, had gone up to 20 percent.
