NEW DELHI: Indian President R. Venkataraman has nominated the former Jammu and Kashmir governor, Jagmohan to the upper house of parliament.

Jagmohan who was initially reluctant to accept the offer has accepted the nomination.

Jagmohan, resigned last week from his second tenure as governor of Kashmir following controversies over the policies being pursued resolve the volatile situation in the state.

Jagmohan had been installed as governor following the formation of the National Front government at the center early this year only. He held that violence in the state had to be put down with a firm hand before any negotiations could take place.

All the Congress I members walked out of the upper house of Parliament to protest the nomination of Jagmohan.

The leader of the opposition P Shiv Shankar said Jagmohan’s nomination was against all political norms and value based politics.

The former Jammu and Kashmir governor had been nominated to “appease” the rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Shankar said.

The Congress 1 members staged the walk out immediately after chairman Shankar Dayal Sharma called Jagmohan’s name for taking oath as a member.

Later, Jagmohan was administered the oath.

Jagmohan resigned as the governor of Kashmir last week after a storm of protest raged over the firing on processionists carrying the dead body of Kashmir’s top Muslim cleric, Mirwaiz Mohammed Faroog, who was assassinated by unknown gunmen.
