Fluoride makes tooth enamel more resistant to decay. There are two ways fluoride can be effective. When taken during the formative years, fluoride becomes part of the entire thickness of ‘enamel. The best way to achieve proper levels is through water fluoridation. Unfortunately, the water in our area is not fluorides and we must rely on fluoride vitamin combinations or fluoride alone as a liquid or pills. All of these are available by prescription only.
After teeth erupt, fluoride can still be applied directly to the teeth. The benefit is not as great because only the outer surface of enamel can be made fluoride rinses, toothpastes and treat in the dental office are all utilized for Purpose.
