NEW YORK: Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s special envoy on the Kashmir issue had a series of meetings with senior officials of the US administration and the Congress last week and sought their support for a UN supervised plebiscite in Kashmir.

Addressing a press conference after the meetings, Iqbal Akhund said he told the US Officials that the current situation in Kashmir provided an opportunity to countries like the United States to use their influence to bring about a political settlement on the issue.

He claimed that the officials were sympathetic, recognized that a dispute existed and wanted India and Pakistan to solve It.

India considers Kashmir to be its integral part and rejects repeated Pakistan calls for a plebiscite in the state.

Akhund met Vice President Dan Quayle, national security adviser Brent Scowcroft, acting secretary of defense Donald Atwood and undersecretary of state for political affairs Robert Kimmet besides key members of the US Congress.

He is scheduled to meet the United Nations secretary general on Monday.
