FREMONT: After a long struggle for the approval of a main building complex, the main hall will be built next to the dining hall which is presently used for worship at the Gurdwara Sahib Fremont. The building permit was unanimously approved by the Fremont Planning Commission. The Fremont Gurdwara committee expects the construction to be completed by Basakhi, April 1991 if all goes according to schedule.

Ten years ago, plans were made for a Gurdwara in Fremont with a separate main Hall and dining hall. Plans of both halls were approved. However, because of the lack of funds, only the dining hall was completed. A few years later, when there was enough money, new plans were made for a larger hall with adequate capacity for the growing Sikh community.

Unfortunately, zoning around the Gurdwara property changed. The new plans were rejected on the grounds of fire hazard and inadequate parking. Finally, revised plans were approved on Thursday, February 8, 1990, that fit the criteria of the Fremont Planning Commission and the Sikh community.

Now that the preliminary step has been approved, the working and structural drawings need to be produced and then approved. According to the planned schedule, this critical step should be completed by July and then the construction will begin. The estimated cost of this entire project is estimated to be between $1.5 and $2 million. However, with the large Sikh community, the Fremont Gurdwara committee thinks a loan should not be necessary. The new building should be erected by April 1991 in time to celebrate the coinciding birth anniversary of the Khalsa. “This is a very important task in front of us, and with Waheguru Ji’s blessings and the support of the Sikh community, we together will complete this long project quickly,” says S. Bhajan S. Bhinder, President of the Gurdwara Sahib Fremont.
