NEW DELHI: Federal Indian home minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed Sunday appraised the President r Venkataraman of the current situation in the states of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir and assured him that there would be no compromise with the terrorists.

In a long meeting with the president, the home minister told him that the government viewed with concern the developments in Kashmir. He said on this part the federal government has provided all help including Para military forces to the state to help it tide over the current situation in the Kashmir valley, according to official sources,

Kashmir valley, the Muslim majority region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, had in the recent past experienced widespread disturbances, suspected to be the handiwork of the militants belonging to the so called Jammu and Kashmir liberation front or some other similar organizations. JKLF had late last year claimed responsibility for the abduction of Syed’s daughter who was later released in exchange for the five captive extremists.

The home minister also apprised the president of the deliberations in the cabinet committee on Punjab and Kashmir. The government has taken various political initiatives to find a political solution to the Punjab problem he told Venkataraman.

Sayeed added that the law and order in Punjab would be maintained.

Mufti Mohammed, the first Muslim federal home minister in India had last year described the situation in the Jammu and Kashmir as “worse than Punjab”. The state of Punjab has been witnessing a spate of extremists-linked violence for last more than five years.
