NEW DELHE Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh (retd) the Lt Governor of Delhi said his Administration would provide evidence against those involved in the riots in November 1984.
“It is in everybody’s mind that enough action has not been taken against the culprits of the riots,” he said.
Mr. Arjan Singh said a lot would have to be done for rehabilitating and educating the dependents and children of those killed in the riots, as the children whose near and dear ones had been killed, would bear a “permanent grudge” if it was not done so and would grow up to be criminals.
He however described the law and order situation in the Capital as much better than before.
In reply to a question as to how he proposed to tackle the “rampant corruption” in the Delhi Administration he said the Administration had to come down with a heavy hand if high officials were found indulging in it. But he regret ted the tendency to come down with a “hammer” on small people and treating the high-ups with a “feather” for the same offence.
Asked whether he would recommend dissolution of the Delhi Metropolitan Council and the Municipal Corporation, he said: “timely elections are the key to democracy and in my opinion elections should either be held on or before time.”
Referring to Punjab, he said it seemed strange that the situation there was alright for holding the Lok Sahba elections but not the Assembly poll.
