TORONTO: India and Canada will hold a joint conference on human rights next February in New Delhi. An agreement to that effect assigned by Justice Ragunath Misra, chairman of India’s National Human Rights Commission, and Maxwell Yalden, chief of the Canadian counterpart, in Ottawa earlier this month.
The conference will deal with three broad themes: human rights education and training for members and staffers of rights institutions; the role of these institutions in public education and the role of other institutions, such as nongovernmental organizations and university rights centers, in educating the public on the issue.
Misra, who was on a visit to Canada, ‘and the Yalden also discussed potential areas of cooperation between the ‘countries. “It was agreed in particular that the staff of the two commissions should explore efforts to enhance the links between rights centers al universities in Canada and India,” they said.
This and other possible areas of collaboration will be reviewed at the time of the joint seminar, with a view toward establishing additional programs of cooperation.
Justice Fatima Beevi and Justice Malimath, members of the Indian commission, have visited Canada and met with rights commission officials at the federal and provincial levels. Yalden has visited in New Delhi on Misra’s invitation.
