COLOMBO: Sri Lankan police have uncovered a plot by Tamil Tiger separatists to assassinate Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, police said Sept. 11th.
“Police have arrested a Tamil in Colombo with details of a plot to kill the Indian Prime Minister and the Sri Lankan President,” a police spokesman said. The Lankadeepa Sinhala language newspaper quoted police officials as saying the Tigers had decided to kill Rao because “he had not done anything for the LTTE in the northern Jaffna peninsula.”
Police said they had stepped up security for Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga after recent revelations of LTTE suicide squads trained to kill her.
The Sri Lankan police is probing a statement by a LTTE militant nowintheircustody that“an agent” has been dispatched by Valupillat Prabhakaran to Madras and or dared to await “instructions.”
Rasan alias Mukundan, a senior cadre of the LTTE was caught by the police near the official residence of President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
Deputy Inspector General of Police H.M.B.S. Kotakadenia said the police was trying to get more details from Rasan on the statement about the LTTE agent being sent by Prabhakaran to Madras on a mission.
Kotagadenia said that Rasan was a senior cadre of the LTTE having joined the movement in 1989. He hhas personally met Prabhakaran and won a “gold medal” from the LTTE leader after completing a training course in Singapore.
