GUWAHATI (PTI): Altogether 99 people were killed and 300 others injured in clashes in three districts of north eastern state of Assam following the mosque demolition at Ayodhya in December 1992.

In a note submitted to prime minister P.V Narasimha Rao here, chief minister Hiteswar Saikia said communal clashes took place in the districts of ‘Nagaon, Dhubri and Goalpara. The situation was brought under control with the assistance of the army.

A massive relief and rehabilitation scheme was drawn up by the government for the riot victims, he said. Sporadic incidents were still giving disturbing signs of communal buildup in Dhubri, Nagaon, Moriggon and Cachar districts. Religious and fundamentalists forces were on the rise, the note said.

The situation was under “careful watch,” it added.
