CHANDIGARH: Ram Singh alias Amrik Singh, Lt. Gen of the Bhindranwale Tigers Force of Khalistan (BTKF), was among 15 persons killed in Punjab while the Chandigarh Police arrested an independent candidate, Gurpreet Singh for allegedly having links with militants Aug 1, reports PTI. Over the week 95 persons were killed in incidents of violence. Ram Singh, who carried a reward of 100,000 on his head and was involved in over 100killings, was killed in an encounter with police near village Khanpur in Amritsar district Thursday. Militants gunned down a police constable Jaswant Singh in Tarn Taran police district. The body of the constable, who was kidnapped on Monday, last was recovered from a drain in village Ratol Thursday.

Gurpreet Singh, who is contesting from Jagraon assembly constituency in Ludhiana district of Punjab, was arrested under the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) at Chandigarh.

NEW DELHI: The Indian government banned a book entitled Samraj (Volume-1) written by a foreigner for depicting the character of Draupadi “in a vulgar and obscene manner and hurting the religious susceptibilities of the in a Hindus. A notification, issued by M.U-Siddiqui, the deputy secretary (home), Delhi Administration, said every copy of the book written by Ms Elaine Arone had been confiscated by the government. The book was first published in the United Kingdom in 1989. The notification said the said book deliberately portrayed Draupadi, the beautiful and fiery wife of the Pandavas in the epic Mahabharata, in a vulgar and Obscene manner so as to “outrage the religious feelings of the Hindus by insulting their religion and religious beliefs,” (Times of India).
