DUMKA: Ninety people have died in a cholera epidemic in Dumka district of eastern Bihar state, Officials said Saturday.

A report from Patna said over three million people in 2,200 villages spread over 15 districts of Bihar are reeling under the impact of current floods in the state.

The overall situation was likely to deteriorate with repeated downpours in the catchment areas of major rivers.

Official sources Saturday said that the first wave of floods had damaged standing crops worth Rs 80 million in about 200,000 hectares. Damage to 2500 houses had been estimated at Rs 2.5 million while that to public property around Rs 10 million.

Relief department sources said that 3000 boats had been pressed into service to render relief and Rescue operations while 201 relief centers were functioning round the clock to provide succor.
