NEW YORK: On Saturday April 29.1995, from 11am-4pm, 20,00030,000 members of the Sikh community are expected to march down 41st Street to Madison Avenue (Madison Square Park, 23rd Street) in one of New York City’s most colorful parades. The Tri-State Sikh Community has made the theme of the 8th Annual Sikh day Parade a dedication to the victim of human rights violation around the world.
There will be many colorful and festive floats representing various aspects of the Sikh religion, history and culture; the first of which will carry the Sikh scripture called the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, which contains writings of the Sikh Gurus and also includes works of Hindu, Muslim and Sufi saints calling for belief in One Universal God. The next float will carry a replica of the Golden Temple which is located in Amritsar, Punjab. The Golden Temple is equivalent of the Vatican or Mecca, to a Sikh. Subsequent floats will reflect other aspects of the Sikh religion, history and culture, including highlighting the support of News Media in presenting the Sikh’s way of life and belief.
Upon arrival at the park, free food will be distributed to everyone there in the Sikh traditional practice of langar, a free community meal). Speeches, dancing, music and a fair will follow the meal in the park providing an enjoyable and fun-filled day for all. Present will be religious and political leaders, including Congressman Dan Burton, Sunie Senators, Assemblypersons and representatives of the City government.
