CHANDIGARH: A senior Akali Dal (Mann) leader and three militants were among 22 persons killed in Punjab on Aug 23 while militants looted arms and ammunition from a police pose in Tarn Taran district.
Early on Thursday Mohinder Singh, member of the Akali Dal (Mann) working committee and father of Manbir Singh Chehru was shot dead in village Chehru in Kapurthala district.
In Lalpura village of Tarn Taran district, militants locked up seven security personnel and looted a large quantity of arms, ammunition and a wireless set from a police post.
Also shot dead were two relatives of a retired Punjab police sub inspector, Mr Gurdial Singh, in Uski Sainian village in Patiala district early on Thursday. The victims were identified as Bachan Singh and Deep Singh, brother and nephew respectively of the police officer.
A shopkeeper in Nagri village was shot in the same district, reports said.
Three unidentified intruders were killed in an encounter with the B.S.F. near Mahwa village in the Gharinda police station area of Amritsar district. Empty cartridges of Ak47 rifle were found at the spot.
Two persons, Bhaur Singh and Mahinder Singh were gunned down in village Bule in Ferozepur district. Another person, Mangat Ram was shot dead near village Malbulan in the same district. In an unprecedented incident, militants locked three police officers in a police post in Lalpura village in Tarn ‘Taran and escaped with seven 303 rifles, 500 cartridges and one very high frequency (VHF) wireless set.
Meanwhile security forces seized a large quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives from a man arrested in Tarn Taran area.
The seizures included an anti-tank mine, 7.5 kgms of explosive material, 39 small pipe bombs, four pencil bombs, two time bomb devices, 10 detonators and one a k 47 rifle.
In separate incidents, gunmen killed three people in village Bainstani in Hoshiarpur district, one person at Doraha town of Ludhiana and another in Nagri village of Patiala. The Ropar district Deputy Superintendent of Police Baldev Singh, his gunman and his driver were killed in an ambush in the district on August 27.
