CHANDIGARH, India: One person was killed and two others were injured in police firing at Amritsar and an indefinite curfew was imposed in the walled city, on June 2ist. The city was rocked by mob violence and also there were six stabbing incidents during a bandh; the call for which was given by the several Hindu organizations to protest against the Killing of eight persons in Gorhwal village, fourteen kilometers from Taran Tarran on June 20th. The police fought a ding-dong battle with the mob of youngmen indulging in stone throwing, hitting two wheelers and damaging public property. The trouble was confined to a kilometer area in the walled city. The firing took place in a Hindu college, the youth who died in the firing is identified as Rajinder. The injured persons ‘were taken to the Guru Teg Bhahdur Hospital, According to the police sources, the trouble arose when certain workers of Hindu Raksha Sammti snatched away a revolver of an A.S.I who was on duty. When the mob advanced, the policeman fired in the air but he was out-numbered by the mob. The police men ran to safety and took shelter outside a post-office in nearby Katra Sant Singh. All these stabbing incidents were reported from the different parts of the city. One body was found from near the railway bridge. Among those who were injured and were ‘admitted to the hospital are: Sudarshan Singh, Santokh Singh, Jassa Singh, Harjit Singh, Sawaran Singh, and Hardial Singh. They are all ‘out of danger. The senior superintendent of police said that the police have rounded up 2 few persons reportedly involved in these stabbing incidents.
