NEW DELHI: Seven laborers were buried alive when a mine caved in’ near the Bhatti stone quarries in the outskirts of South Delhi on Wednesday.

Lt Governor of Delhi air chief marshal (retd) Arjan Singh has ordered an inquiry into the accident and directed the authorities to release ex-gratia payments to the next of kin of those killed.

The labourers all from Bihar state, where loading the stones into trucks at a pit when a portion of the mine came crashing down.

Police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence and arrested three persons employed by the mine contractors.

The mines, earlier declared unsafe, were brought into operation from May 22.
