NEW DELHI, India: Rescue teams dug today through the rubble of a textile factory building that collapsed in monsoon rains, killing at least 14 people and leaving nearly 70 others missing, the Press Trust of India said,
‘The domestic news agency said police, fire-fighters and civilians Joined in the rescue operation at the Backline Fabrics Ltd. plant in Taloja, about 750 miles southwest of New Delhi and 40 miles south of Bombay.
A three-story building at the factory collapsed in heavy monsoon rains Sunday morning while about 125 employees were working inside and 25 people were injured, the Press Trust said.
At least 69 people were missing and feared trapped in the rubble and one New Delhi newspaper, the Indian Express, quoted a senior official as saying that their chances of being found alive were slim.
Rescue workers on Sunday, when 10 bodies were recovered, reported hearing the screams of people buried in the debris as heavy concrete slabs were being removed by cranes.
‘The Press Trust quoted police as saying a number of employees managed to escape the cascading ‘concrete and bricks when the building collapsed.
