SRINAGAR: On August 16, a Junior commissioned officer and five soldiers were killed and six Jawans injured in three explosions in the Uri sector, 100 km north west from here.

According to official sources, the militants had placed bags full of explosives at four places in the five km belt, The soldiers, who were watching out for possible infiltration from across the border, picked up the bags, thinking that they contained ammunition. But the explosives went off, killing six and wounding six.

 

A large number of militants have been killed in the five km belt recently while trying to sneak into the Valley from Pakistan occupied Kashmir. The sources believe that the explosions were in retaliation for these killings.

The Army has begun combing Operations and traffic on the Baramulla Uri road has been suspended.

Meanwhile, 10 persons were injured when the BSF allegedly fired on a passenger bus at Sopore town in northwest Kashmir Monday. According to the police, the militants had earlier, fired a few shots in the area without any casualties. The ill-fated bus was coming from Bandipora.

It is learned that the bomb explosion at Sumalpur in Jammu Sun day to which two persons were killed was not related to separatist violence. Official sources said the explosive material was inside steel pipes being fitted to a railing, The contractor had bought the pipes from a taddiwalla who, in tum, had purchased them from the Army. The Army uses these pipes for under water explosions, sources Said.
