NEW DELHI: More than 55 million children work as labor in Indian industries a two-day workshop on eradication of ChiId labour in carpet industry was told Friday.
Swami Agnivesh president of the Morcha Bonded Labour Liberation Front told the workshop that more than 55 million children were working as labor in several industries in the country.
The legislations banning chi| Id labour could not be strictly implemented due to lack of | political and judicial will he said.
Inaugurating the workshop organized by liberation front minister for labour and welfare Ramji Lal Suman said about 100 industrial training institutes would be opened soon at an estimated cost of Rs four billion with World Bank aid.
He reiterated the government’s commitment for strictly enforcing all labour laws.
Suman said fewer employment opportunities and poor economic condition forced children to take work in leather glass and carpet industries
He said the government was committed to improve the lot of women and children economically.
Many voluntary agencies social activists and researchers from India Germany and Holland are participating in the workshop which seeks to encourage dialogue with manufacturers and exporters to reduce child labor.
