MEERUT: Five people died and 17 others were injured some of them seriously when a powerful bomb exploded in the Delhi bound Chhattisgarh express in the early hours of Thursday morning, PTI reports,

The blast, which took place at 0220 hours local time just outside the Meerut cantonment railway station, was so powerful that four people died on the spot and another succumbed to his injuries later.

The injured were rushed to the army hospital and the Meerut Medical College hospital. The condition of those hospitalized was reported to be “‘serious.”

A police official said that the blast occurred soon after the train stopped at the Meerut cantonment station.

JHA said the explosion seemed to have been caused by a time bomb.
