CHANDIGARH: In incidents of violence in Punjab, 48 persons were killed over the week. A powerful bomb exploded near Dagru railway station immediately after the Ludhiana Ferozepur passenger train passed the track. No passengers were reported injured.
Police sources said it seemed the timer did not work properly. About three feet of the damaged rail track was repaired and normal traffic restored later.
Director General of police KPS Gill said here that five militants were killed in two separate encounters in Ropar and Batala districts Sunday.
Police recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition, including two Ak-47 rifles, from the places where the encounters took place.
A report from Amritsar said militants fired three rockets at the house of Congress worker Rajinder Pal in village Jabbowal in Amnitsar district.
The rockets caused minor damage to the property but nobody was hurt, police said.
In Amritsar city militants killed two persons and injured two others in separate incidents. One of the injured later died in a hospital, police said.
One person was killed in cross firing between militants and the security forces near village Asal Uttara in Amritsar district Sunday.
Unidentified assailants shot dead one Jalaldin in village Gohar Khurd in Sangror district.
Three militants intruded into a house of Satnam Singh in village Talwandi Mehama in Hoshiarpur district and shot dead his son and a relative.
In another incident in the district two militants shot dead one Harbans Singh in Raipur village.
Six militants were arrested in Ropar, two in Batala and one in Amritsar. Some arms and ammunition was seized from them.
A member of the CPM executive and of the party Kisan Sabha (farmers union) Kartar Chand was shot dead in Ropar district.
Three militants were gunned down in an “encounter” near village Talwandi Mor Singhwala village under Patti police station in Tarn Taran district this afternoon. One AK 47 rifle, three grenades and a large quantity of ammunition were seized from the scene, police said.
Gunned down two persons near Akalgarh village under Jandiala police station in the adjoining Majitha district Thursday.
Twelve suspected militants were arrested in Faridkot, Ferozepur, Majitha, Amritsar and Bhatinda districts.
