CHANDIGARH: Gunmen massacred 19 people at a Harijan Dharamshala (an inn for untouchables) in Faridkot district Tuesday while 25 others including eight militants were killed elsewhere in Punjab since Monday night police said.
Police said some car-borne militants came to the Harijan Dharamshala in Sewal village Faridkot district and opened indiscriminate firing. Earlier reports said five persons were killed but later 14 more deaths were reported taking the toll in the shootout to 19.
The deceased have not been identified.
Five men were killed in an encounter with security forces near village Laddhu in Tarn Taran police district Tuesday. The deceased were yet to be identified.
Four AK-47 rifles three self-loading rifles and a large quantity of ammunition were recovered from the encounter scene.
Bhai Paramjit Singh chief of the KLO consumed cyanide and died after exhausting his ammunition in an encounter with security forces at Bhobar Saidan village in Gurdaspur district Tuesday police here said.
Police said Bhai Pararnjit Singh alias Hari Singh alias Baba Nand was wanted in connection with more than 50 killings. The encounter took place after security personnel raided a farm house in the village. Gunmen went to the house of one Bhag Singh in Tarn Taran area and shot dead his wife police said Tuesday.
Four gunmen went to a house in village Gadda Sohab in Ferozepur district and gunned down a person while another person was kidnapped and shot dead near Veroke village in Majitha district. Police said here two gunmen shot at and injured one Samim Ahmed on the G.T. road near Doraha in Ludhiana district. The victim later succumbed to his injuries police added.
In other incidents a senior state civil service (PCS) officer two militants and a constable were killed while a petrol filling station owner was kidnapped and four militants were arrested.
Police said here militants struck in a big way and shot dead five persons in village sewewal in Faridkot district today. The identity of the deceased was unknown.
A senior P.C.S. officer Han Om Bablani posted as administrative officer in the Punjab Public Works Department headquarters at Patiala was shot dead by two alleged militants in his office.
A liquor vend salesman was shot dead in village Shiekhpura in Bhatinda district police said here
A suspected militant Bhai Balkar Singh was killed allegedly as a result of the inter-gang rivalry in village Daleri in Tarn Taran district police reports here said.
