NEW DELHI,(PTI ): Thirty-five newly elected members including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (JD) Presidents Murli Manohar Joshi and S.R. Bommai, (EDS correct) and former deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament), Najma Heptullah, were sworn in the Rajya Sabha and two in the Lok Sabha (Lower House), soon after parliament began its session on July 8. The 35 members were elected to the Rajya Sabha in the recent biennial polls from seven states Madhya Pradesh (4), Maharashtra (6), Orissa (2), Rajasthan (4), Tamil Nadu (6) and Uttar Pradesh (i), Ten more newly elected members to the Rajya Sabha are expected to take oath on July 9. Thirteen members who took oath on Wednesday belong to BJP. Barring Promodh Mahajan, Sunder Singh Bhandari and Shibcharan Singh, the rest took the oath in Sanskrit, Five AIADMK members took the oath in Tamil. Eleven new members belongs to Congress-I, Janata Dal three, independent two, and Shiv Senaone, The BJP is now the largest Opposition party in the Rajya Sabha, and its leader in the house, Sikandar Bakht becomes the leader of the opposition in the house.

In the Lok Sabha, new members Rajesh Khanna (Cong-1), elected from New Delhi constituency, and Raj Kishore Maha to (JMM), elected from Giridh in Bihar in last month’s by-election, took their oaths AMID thumping of desks.
