THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (PTI): Thirty-six people, including 33 policemen, were injured in violent incidents in different parts of Kerala in south India as activists of Islamic Sevak Sangh (ISS) clashed with the police during protests against the recent bomb attack on ISS chief Abdul Nazar Madani,
Madani’ s right leg was amputated below the knee at the medical college hospital here.
Police opened fire in two places. Three people were injured in the firing in Enchakkal area of this city, but no one was injured in the firing at Pooyappalli in Kollam district. Thirty-three policemen were hurt during clashes with the ISS activists in various places in the state, acting Kerala chief minister C.V. Padmarajan said.
Padmarajan told newsmen there had been sporadic violence in southern parts of the state but the situation had been brought under control. He added, 21 state wan sport buses, one police van, a private bus and three newspaper vans had been damaged in stone throwing and arson.
Two country-made bombs had been hurled at Madani as he was walking towards an orphanage near Mainagappally in Kollam district, Padmarajan said.
The ISS” chiefs guard lost a finger on his left hand while the other person Bashir Kunhu escaped with minor injuries, he said.
At Enchakkal in the city, police fired five rounds, injuring three persons after a mobile police party was attacked by a600-strong group of ISS activists. At Pooyappalli, police fired two rounds when a group of persons attacked a police party removing a road block.
